C-DL: Coordinated Direct Links for Serving VR Traffic in Wi-Fi 8 Networks
Interactive Virtual Reality (VR) equipment is gaining popularity steadily. To reduce the cost and complexity of VR devices, video rendering is often performed on a remote VR server, such as a gaming laptop, and then sent to the VR headset via Wi-Fi. However, the interactivity of VR strictly limits the maximal delay and frame loss, and the current Wi-Fi channel access methods are struggling with satisfying these requirements. This paper develops and investigates a novel C-DL algorithm that allows an AP to allocate some of its frequency resources for transmissions between the VR server and the VR headset. Using the NS-3 simulator, it is shown that C-DL improves VR quality of service and increases the maximal VR bitrate that can be served.
