Auto Phase Management Optimization of Multiphase Voltage Regulator to Improve ErP Lot 3 Performance Per Watt
The paper introduces auto phase management (APM) as a means to enhance power delivery efficiency in computers, aiming to achieve higher Performance per Watt (PPW) scores under the Energy-related Products (ErP) Lot 3 regulations set by the European Commission. The latest version of the Personal Computer Energy Efficiency Tool evaluates PPW by executing a set of 18 benchmark software (worklets) on the unit under test (UUT). Subsequently, the European Commission plans to categorize UUT scores into 7 energy classes for all computers sold in the European Union. Improving PPW can be achieved by either enhancing performance at constant power or maintaining performance while reducing power consumption. This paper focuses on the introduction of APM and its role in enhancing power delivery efficiency, leading to improved PPW scores in compliance with ErP Lot 3 regulations. It discusses the design considerations of APM, its correlation with ErP Lot 3 worklets' current and residency data and presents APM test results. Through this exploration, the paper aims to provide insights into how APM can be leveraged to optimize computer energy efficiency and meet regulatory standards effectively.
