The representation of the informativeness category in the headlines of English and Chinese sports news

This article considers sports news headlines, as the most important elements of a news article, from ten media sources in terms of the information types they contain. The aim of the study is to identify similarities and differences in the representation of the informativeness category in the sports publicistic discourse on the material of the English and Chinese languages. The scientific novelty of the research consists in identifying the correlations between factual, content-conceptual and implicative information, in accordance with I. R. Galperin’s approach. The study found that the largest share belongs to the content-conceptual information with the elements of evaluative and figurative linguistic devices; the second most frequent group embraces information containing facts (proper names, numerical data), and the smallest group includes linguistic means with the implicative information. The differences include a higher degree of personification and citation in the English headings; while the Chinese headings contain a more prominent number of toponyms, numerical data, and are characterized by a more positive implicative meaning. The obtained correlations testify to the linguistic peculiarities of news composition and information presentation in different linguocultures.
