Crack detection and measurement using the lidar sensor of the iPhone 13 pro max
This study evaluates the accuracy of the iPhone 13 Pro Max's LiDAR sensor for detecting and measuring cracks in construction structures. An experimental analysis compared LiDAR results with traditional methods such as laser scanning and calipers. Cracks larger than 1 cm were detected with 92% accuracy; however, accuracy decreased for cracks smaller than 1 cm due to technological limitations. The methodology involved the use of apps like 3D Scanner App™ and iPhone’s Measure app, complemented by Autodesk ReCap Pro analysis. Results confirm the LiDAR sensor's potential for preliminary inspections, emphasizing its accessibility and speed, though its precision is insufficient for small cracks. This work highlights the need for complementary techniques to enhance reliability in complex environments.
