Mundskyllevæskers rolle i hjemmetandplejen
English summary The role of mouthrinse in homebased oral hygiene procedures Nor Tannlegeforen Tid. 2025; 135: 114-9. Mouthrinses are divided into cosmetic or therapeutic mouthrinses. Cosmetic mouthrinses have no chemical or biological application beyond their temporary benefit. Therapeutic mouthrinses, on the other hand, have active ingredients. Mouthrinses holds potential to serve as a beneficial addition to regular oral hygiene routines, since fluids can reach areas that may be difficult to access with a toothbrush, interdental brushes and floss. Therapeutic mouthrinses may contain either antibacterial ingredients and/or fluoride to prevent or control oral biofilm-associated diseases and bad breath. The preventive fraction using therapeutic mouthrinses with fluoride on caries incidence is significant, and be considered as a preventive option for patients with high caries risk older than 5 years. Chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthrinse is considered the most effective antiplaque agent available. CHX mouthrinses are recommended for short-term use only, and their use is advised to be based on recommendations from healthcare professionals only. Mouthrinses containing various active ingredients have been reported to reduce volatile sulphur compounds (VSC), however, there is limited evidence showcasing efficacy on intra-oral halitosis. When using therapeutic mouthrinses, it is recommended to consult with a dentist for determination, if there is a clinical indication for mouthrinse.
