Abstract

The electric dipole strength distribution in <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mmultiscripts><a:mi>Ni</a:mi><a:mprescripts/><a:none/><a:mn>58</a:mn></a:mmultiscripts></a:math> between 6 and 20 MeV has been determined from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles at RCNP, Osaka. The experimental data are rather well reproduced by quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations including vibration coupling, despite a mild dependence on the adopted Skyrme interaction. They allow an estimate of the experimentally inaccessible high-energy contribution above 20 MeV, leading to an electric dipole polarizability <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><b:mrow><b:msub><b:mi>α</b:mi><b:mi mathvariant="normal">D</b:mi></b:msub><b:mrow><b:mo>(</b:mo><b:mmultiscripts><b:mi>Ni</b:mi><b:mprescripts/><b:none/><b:mn>58</b:mn></b:mmultiscripts><b:mo>)</b:mo></b:mrow><b:mo>=</b:mo><b:mn>3.48</b:mn><b:mrow><b:mo>(</b:mo><b:mn>31</b:mn><b:mo>)</b:mo></b:mrow><b:mspace width="4pt"/><b:msup><b:mrow><b:mi>fm</b:mi></b:mrow><b:mn>3</b:mn></b:msup></b:mrow></b:math>. This serves as a test case for recent extensions of coupled-cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions to nuclei with two nucleons on top of a closed-shell system.
