WHO, USAID, PEPFAR: first targets of Trump's presidency
Within hours of being sworn in as US President on Jan 20, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing his country from WHO. The order cited the “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, [WHO’s] failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states”. Trump had attempted to leave WHO during his first term as US president, which ran from 2017 to 2021, but the decision was overturned by his successor and predecessor, Joe Biden.
