A Portable and Open-Source Potentiostat for Continuous Electrochemical Analysis

This manuscript demonstrates a portable and open-source potentiostat for continuous electrochemical analysis to promote electrochemical analysis technology from the laboratory to the consumer electronics market. This innovative potentiostat comprises a smartphone application (APP) and an application-specified printed circuit. The smartphone APP serves as a user interface, facilitating data reception, inputting instructions, and providing real-time experimental data visualization. The application-specified printed circuit acts as an intermediary, responsible for storing and processing analog signals acquired from the electrochemical electrodes while establishing seamless communication with the smartphone APP. This potentiostat offers a function of chronoamperometry techniques, featuring a broad current and voltage range of 0.1 μA to 2000 μA and ±10 V, respectively. This chronoamperometry technique covers the majority of scenarios of electrochemical detection. Resistance and electrochemical measurements showcase its performance, which closely rivals that of benchtop commercial potentiostats. It is an open-source platform and aims to better support electrochemical researchers by reducing the repetitive effort required for circuit development, enabling them to focus more on creative electrochemical research.
