A First-Principle Investigation of Sc-Doped MoS2 for Hydrogen Gas Detection
This study investigates the electronic and adsorption properties of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex> and Sc-doped <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MoS}_{2}(\text{Sc}-\text{MoS}_{2})$</tex> monolayers for <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{H}_{2}$</tex> detection using Density Functional Theory (DFT). We calculated the adsorption energy <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\mathrm{E}_{ad})$</tex>, charge transfer <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\mathrm{Q}_{T})$</tex>, and adsorption distance <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(D)$</tex> to characterize the adsorption properties. To further understand the effect of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{H}_{2}$</tex> gas adsorption on electronic characteristics, we evaluated the bandgap, Total Density of States (TDOS), and Projected Density of States (PDOS). With Sc doping, the bandgap of the <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex> reduced from 1.77 eV to 0.15 eV suggesting the improvement in the conduction property of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex>. The adsorption energy for <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{H}_{2}$</tex> on Sc <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$-\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex> is −4.8 e V, stronger than that of pristine <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex>. This study suggest that Sc <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$-\text{MoS}_{2}$</tex> is a promising material for <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{H}_2$</tex> gas detection. These results highlight the potential of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{Sc}-\text{MoS}_2$</tex> in gas sensitivity applications, particularly for detecting <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{H}_{2}$</tex> leakage, providing a theoretical basis for its use in sensor technology.
