Reservation-Based Vehicle Cooperation Method for Mixed Traffic Flow at Ramps

On-ramp merging is a high-risk road traffic scenario. The disordered merging of on-ramp vehicles interferes with the traffic flow of adjacent main road, causing traffic jams. In this paper, a novel reservation-based vehicle cooperation method is proposed to address on-ramp merging challenges. First, we make a precise division between traffic demand and spatio-temporal supply. Second, the connected vehicle center (CVC) allocates feasible traffic resources to vehicles. Third, vehicle trajectories are optimized to minimize travel delays for all vehicles. Finally, the method is tested in simulation based on SUMO platform. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce traffic delay and alleviate traffic congestion at ramps.
