Control-Oriented Modeling of Floating Wind Turbines with Added Mass Based on Kane's Method
This paper discusses advancements in hydrodynamic load modeling for wind turbine simulations, focusing on the development and validation of a simplified model. The study selects the International Energy Agency (IEA) UMine 15-MW semi-submersible wind turbine and constructs a simplified rigid body model using the Kane's method, verified against OpenFAST responses. Further, the hydrodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine platform are analyzed utilizing the HydroDyn toolbox. The analysis proposes a modeling method that incorporates the added mass load into the motion equations, and validates this approach through simulation tests against OpenFAST. Results indicate that the simplified model accurately represents platform motion, and demonstrate that modeling added mass in structural dynamics effectively addresses numerical deviations and divergences.
