Optimising chemoradiotherapy in anal cancer
Concurrent chemoradiotherapy is the standard treatment for localised squamous-cell carcinoma of the anus. Even though this approach is well established, research efforts are ongoing to optimise this therapeutic option to maximise oncological outcomes, decrease treatment-related toxicity profile, and optimise health-related quality of life. We provide an overview of the available data and the active fields of research in the optimisation of chemoradiotherapy in anal cancer patients. • Concurrent chemoradiation is the standard definitive treatment in localised anal cancer. • Efforts are ongoing to optimise concurrent chemoradiation. • Personalised dose prescription, volume selection and definition and combined modality treatment are being investigated. • Risk stratification, treatment delivery and health-related quality of life are crucial topics of research. • A multidisciplinary approach is cogent.
