BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING AS AN ELEMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF LOGISTICS SYSTEMS

The article examines the role of biodegradable packaging as an important element of sustainable development of logistics systems, which is a key factor in reducing the environmental burden on the environment and supporting the principles of the circular economy. The main types of biodegradable materials are analyzed, including natural biopolymers (cellulose, starch, chitosan, jute), synthetic biopolymers (PLA, PBS, PHB), composite materials and compostable solutions, each of which has its own unique characteristics and applications. The article highlights the economic and environmental benefits of introducing bio-based packaging, including reducing the carbon footprint, optimizing waste management, supporting biodiversity and preserving natural resources. The article also focuses on the challenges of introducing biodegradable packaging, including high production costs, insufficient composting infrastructure, and the need to standardize recycling processes. Particular attention is paid to innovations in the field of biopolymers that allow improving the characteristics of materials, as well as the need to create effective systems for the collection, sorting and utilization of biodegradable materials. The role of international cooperation in the implementation of biodegradable packaging, including the harmonization of international standards, the exchange of best practices, and cooperation between states to jointly address environmental challenges, is also considered. The study formulates recommendations for businesses and government agencies to promote the use of biodegradable packaging in supply chains. The proposed measures are aimed at supporting innovation through incentives for research and development of advanced biopolymer technologies, as well as fostering public-private partnerships to scale their production and adoption. Additionally, the recommendations emphasize the importance of developing infrastructure for the efficient collection, sorting, and processing of biodegradable waste. Raising environmental awareness among consumers and stakeholders is also highlighted as a key strategy to drive demand for sustainable packaging solutions and encourage responsible consumption practices.
