Effect of slip and twinning on texture evolution mechanisms in dual-phase titanium alloys

The plastic deformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was studied using the crystal plasticity (CP) simulation method to investigate the influence of slip and twinning on texture evolution. A typical sheet of a homogenized Ti-6Al-4V equiaxed microstructure with an initial random texture is generated using the Voronoi grain tessellation method. Texture evolution was successfully predicted; the slip and twinning aligned the basal planes of the pole figures (PFs) for the α phase, initially having a random texture. The shear rate of change for each deformation system shows that the basal planes of the deformation texture were formed through the basal slip while rarely occurring through the prismatic slip. The high activity of pyramidal <c+a>-type slip leads to less inclined c -components of the deformation texture. Twinning played a crucial role in texture evolution; the {10 2} twinning reoriented the texture components toward the transverse direction (TD), while the {11 2} twinning reoriented the texture components toward the normal direction (ND). This research provides valuable insights into the contribution of each defamation system in the development of the crystallographic texture of the α phase.
