Research on stroboscopic effect of illumination in tunnel

The lighting in highway tunnels must be suitable for all weather conditions to ensure driver safety. However, the spacing between lighting fixtures can result in constant flickering, which negatively affects visual perception and driving safety. In order to enhance driving safety, this study utilizes the ETVision eye tracker to collect data on changes in pupil diameter and blinking of participants while simulating 3D animations of tunnel vehicle driving. Based on subjective feedback from participants, the analysis reveals that watching videos with stroboscopic effect frequencies of 2.78Hz, 2.47Hz, 2.02Hz, and 1.71Hz does not cause discomfort or pose safety risks for drivers in one-way two-lane tunnel lighting scenarios. Therefore, it is confirmed that the acceptable range for stroboscopic effect frequency in tunnels is between 2.78Hz and 1.71Hz, providing a scientific basis for tunnel lighting design that helps mitigate security risks associated with uneven lighting conditions and improves overall traffic system safety.
