Analysis of Wind Shear Index Algorithm and Wind Speed Estimation in Wind Farms

In this paper, five different methods are used to calculate the wind shear index between different height layers. Based on the calculated wind shear index and the power law formula, the wind speed at a known height is estimated. Then, the estimated results are compared with the measured wind speed to analyze the errors and select a more accurate wind shear index. Utilizing the complete annual wind speed data collected by an anemometer tower in a wind farm in Hexi region, Gansu Province, from 2021 to 2022 with 5-minute intervals, the above-mentioned methods are employed to calculate the wind shear index in this area. The results show that the algorithm using full wind speed data exhibits smaller errors, while the algorithm focusing on typical wind speed segments exhibits larger errors. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the actual situation of the wind farm and select the wind shear index with the smallest error based on the calculation method. This research can be used to more accurately estimate and predict the wind conditions at the hub height of wind turbines, thereby enabling more accurate estimations of power generation and assessments of wind energy resources.
