Trends and challenges in traffic safety: An analysis of road accidents and fatalities in Lebanon (2011-2024)

Abstract. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of traffic accidents and fatalities in Lebanon from 2011 to 2024, with a focus on the years 2016 to 2018. Based on data from the Internal Security Forces' records, shared on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, a total of 6,916 fatalities were recorded over the decade, with a peak in 2014. A significant decline in accidents was observed during the pandemic years, largely due to reduced mobility and the economic crisis. However, this reduction does not necessarily indicate improved road safety, but rather the impact of external factors like economic challenges and public health restrictions. Demographic analysis reveals that males and young adults aged 15-29 face disproportionately high risks, accounting for over 30% of fatalities and 40% of injuries annually.
