Exploring Interactive Teaching Methods Using ChatGPT in Chinese Language Education: Focusing on Chinese Writing Classes

In line with the changing societal landscape and the evolving educational paradigm in the age of artificial intelligence, this study aimed to design a Chinese composition class utilizing ChatGPT to enhance students’ writing abilities and promote practical application. Conducted in the second semester of 2023, the class integrated ChatGPT into the writing curriculum and subsequently analyzed the survey results to assess the potential, direction, and limitations of this approach.<br/> The survey results indicated that the Chinese composition class using ChatGPT had a positive impact on various aspects of learning, including increased interest, enhanced learning engagement through interaction with AI, positive evaluations of the tool’s usability, and improved understanding of the learning content. Notably, the tool demonstrated particularly high positive ratings in addressing grammar errors and facilitating the writing of natural-sounding sentences, which are crucial in Chinese composition. However, further pedagogical strategies, in-depth research, and instructional design are needed to ensure that the interaction between humans and AI can be effectively extended to all aspects of learning. Although this study was primarily based on a single semester of data collection with a limited sample size, it can serve as a valuable reference for future implementation of ChatGPT in classroom settings.
