From Innovation to Impact: The Pivotal Role of Science, Engineering, and Technology in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
This editorial underscores the central role of science, engineering, and technology (SET) in accelerating progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From clean energy innovations and digital healthcare solutions to climate-resilient infrastructure and precision agriculture, SET offers transformative tools to address global challenges. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic policy alignment, technological advancements are fostering inclusive solutions for SDG targets such as zero hunger, clean water, sustainable cities, and climate action. However, barriers persist—particularly in low-income regions—due to limited access to research infrastructure, digital inequality, and underrepresentation in STEM. Bridging these gaps requires coordinated efforts from academia, industry, government, and international bodies. Universities must intensify SDG-focused research, while businesses and policymakers should integrate sustainability principles and ensure equitable access to innovation. This paper calls for inclusive, locally adapted, and ethically guided SET initiatives to maximize global impact. As the 2030 deadline approaches, the Southern Leyte State University Journal of Science, Engineering, and Technology reaffirms its commitment to advancing impactful, interdisciplinary research that drives sustainable development and real-world change.
