Regulating Plasma blood glucose with patient specific conventional controller in insulin dependent subjects

The endocrine process in living beings is highly complex and non-linear. Still they perform stable operations around an operating point naturally. Pancreas is an organ from endocrine system regulates insulin-glucose interactions and maintains plasma blood glucose level in desired ranges between 70-140 mg/dL in healthy human subjects. In insulin dependent diabetic patients due to malfunction pancreatic system fails to keep plasma Blood Glucose (BG) level in safe ranges, such patients can be assisted with automatic external infusion based insulin delivery system by mimicking the artificial pancreatic system. In this paper the proposed work aim to design patient specific conventional control schemes to regulate plasma glucose level in insulin dependent Type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients. The mathematical model for current study of plasma glucose-insulin interactions in the patient proposed by Bergman is used for the simulation purpose in this work. The tuning parameters of these controllers are designed from Ziegler–Nichols (Z-N) as well as Tyreus-Luyben (T-L) methods. The performance analysis of controller with these tuning parameters are compared and discussed in detail considering hypoglycemic limits, transient, steady state responses and insulin infusion rate as performance measures for the selected Bergman Minimal Diabetic Model (BMDM).
