The differences between design/non-design trained users while using AI image generation in industrial design practice
The purpose of this study is to explore the application of AI image generation technology in the field of industrial design, specifically examining how users with varying levels of design experience assess the quality of AIgenerated images and how these judgments impact the final outcomes. The study involves two groups: trained designers (second-year master’s students) and untrained designers (second-year undergraduate students). The analysis focuses on the number of image generations and the reasons behind image selection. The experimental results indicate that trained designers demonstrate greater decisiveness and willingness to experiment in their image selection, spending more time and generating more images on average compared to untrained designers. In terms of image selection and design concept development, trained designers not only consider structural and production feasibility more thoroughly but also have a clearer understanding of their design needs. This leads to more creative and practically valuable design solutions, with a particular emphasis on the interaction between humans and cats, as well as the integration of product aesthetics with pet-related imagery.
