Sustainable Energy and IoT Based Highway Lighting Management System
This paper proposes a smart highway lighting system powered by sustainable and energy storage devices. The system uses microcontroller-based master-slave node combination mechanism for energy harvesting. As an added advantage, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in real time is monitored using an additional node MCU. The roadway lights are powered by batteries that are charged during the day by the solar or wind energy system. The microcontroller maximizes energy consumption and monitor’s system performance. Using a sensor, the extra node MCU continually checks the air quality and provides real-time data to provide a safe environment for walkers and automobiles. The system’s adaptive lighting function further optimizes energy economy by adjusting brightness and lighting schedules based on traffic volume, weather, and availability of natural light using a variety of IR and LDR sensors. The presented system is verified in simulation platform and at the same time a prototype model of the presented system is also implemented.
