Experimental Validation of Dynamic Line Rating of Electric Lines
Dynamic Line Rating, commonly known as real-time thermal rating is a philosophy aimed at maximizing the load current when the environmental conditions allow it without compromising safety. This paper presents the use of models given by the IEEE standards and applies the concept through an experimental setup. The research analyzes various factors affecting the dynamic rating of overhead transmission lines. Different parameters such as wind velocity, solar irradiance, ambient temperature and temperature of conductor were fed into the model and desired dynamic line rating is calculated for the lines. The analysis of different data of the aforementioned parameters was conducted and the dynamic rating of the line was predicted using a machine learning model. The predicted rating can be used to optimize a transmission network’s capacity to handle power by considering system health and overall grid stability. A dynamic line rating model has been implemented in this project by making use of the microcontroller and amp; National Instrument’s LabVIEW as a data acquisition platform.
