CNN for Detecting Weed in Soybean Agriculture
Weed control is an important aspect in soybean cultivation as weeds impact crop yield and disrupts environmental sustainability. Traditional detection methods like manual weeding, mechanical tillage, or chemical herbicides, are usually inefficient, labour intensive, and environmentally destructive. Therefore, computer vision algorithms using CNNs are now being used to automatically and accurately detect weeds. This paper presents a CNN-based model for detecting weeds in soybean crops. High-resolution images from soybean fields were collected and annotated to differentiate soybean plants from various weed species. The CNN model architecture with three layers was chosen in view of performance versus computation efficiency trade-offs. Increased robustness was achieved in the model by training it on augmented data, while testing was done on a reserved subset of the annotated images. The performance metrics used included accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. This CNN-based model, as proposed, provided an accuracy of 96%, with a precision and recall value of 96% and 95.3%, respectively, showing its efficiency in distinguishing weeds from soybean plants. These findings significantly outperformed other traditional weed detection methods and indicate a future for CNNs in weed management for soybean cultivation. That gives a glimpse of the enormous possibility that lies with CNNs for advancements in precision agriculture, enabling targeted weed management, which could reduce herbicide use and thereby enhance crop yields.
