US-China’s Revolution in Military Affairs(RMA) Competition and Implications for Korea's RMA

Global security instability is intensifying as military competition between the United States and China, which are challenging to maintain hegemony in the Pacific region, intensifies. The formation of a confrontational structure between South Korea, the United States and Japan-North Korea, China and Russia in Northeast Asia, the expansion of China and Japan's military power, close military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, and the promotion of North Korean nuclear missiles are increasing security concerns in South Korea. the South Korean military is required to make revolution of military affairs(RMA) to foster an elite military force that fits the reality of the battlefield on the Korean peninsula, taking into account the changes in modern warfare and future warfare. The purpose of this study is to examine the RMA competition between the United States and China, which are military powers that are affecting the security of the Korean peninsula, and to present implications for Korea's RMA. First, the concept of terms related to RMA was established, and the three elements that constitute RMA(operational oncept, Military system and organization) were summarized. After reviewing the theory, the competition for RMA between the United States and China, which leads RMA, was examined from the perspective of the three elements of RMA. Accordingly, the implications for Korea's RMA were presented in terms of 'operational concept in line with the enemies and characteristics of the Korean military', 'development of an asymmetric military system', and 'innovation in organizing a military organization suitable for future warfare'.
