Current Status and Challenges of New and One-Person Librarians
This study was conducted to analyze the job performance status and constraints faced by new and One-Person Librarians in medical libraries during their professional development process, and to derive systematic support measures. In the modern healthcare environment emphasizing evidence-based medicine, medical librarians play a pivotal role as professional information service providers. However, there are structural limitations in demonstrating expertise as many small and medium-sized medical institutions operate with one-person library systems. In January 2024, an online survey was conducted targeting 158 institutions affiliated with The Korean Medical Library Association, analyzing responses from 71 participants. The survey consisted of 12 main questions and 5 sub-questions regarding working environment, difficulties in task performance, and professional development needs. Analysis showed that 74.6% of respondents were affiliated with hospitals, and 62% performed complex duties while belonging to other departments. Major issues identified included insufficient physical environment (69%), role insecurity within the organization (62%), and lack of professional expertise (33.8%), with particular difficulties in research support and budget management. As support measures, strengthening research support education (67%), establishing systematic mentoring systems, developing standardized work manuals, and enhancing librarian networks were suggested. The Korean Medical Library Association needs to diversify its educational programs and establish a platform for continuous professional development to reflect these demands.
