Microstructural Analysis of the Dissimilar Weld AL6XN SASS and 2205 DSS Steels Plates

Abstract Microstructural and chemical analyses of a dissimilar welded joint between AL6XN super austenitic stainless steel and 2205 duplex stainless steel plates by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction were carried out. Gas-metal arc welding process used ERNiCrMo-3 filler wire and 95Ar, 3%N 2 , 2%O 2 as shielding gas. Voltage, current, and travel speed were set up to a heat input of 1.6 kJ/mm. The analyses were done in the dilution, fusion, and heat-affected zones. The dilution percentage at the AL6XN SASS and the 2205 DSS interfaces yielded 12.97 and 13.75%, respectively. Phase analysis provided insights into microstructural evolution, including twin dissolution, at the HAZ-2205 DSS interface. The formed precipitates were rich in Nb, Mo, Ti, Al and Si. The Vickers microhardness measurements revealed variations attributed to thermal gradients and cooling rates.
