Vital Vest: Smart Wearable for Monitoring Construction Worker Health in Harsh Environments

This study introduces Vital Vest, an affordable smart wearable that uses Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve construction workers' safety in challenging conditions. The system, which costs about ₹400, incorporates sensors like the MPU-6050 Gyroscope and Pulse Oximeter 30102 into a wearable jacket. It allows for continuous monitoring by gathering health parameters in real time, such as body temperature, heart rate, SpO2 levels, and activity patterns. Through IoT-based connectivity, detected anomalies send out alerts to relevant parties, guaranteeing prompt interventions. The suggested system can be implemented on microcontrollers such as the ESP8266 since it is optimized for low computational cost and energy efficiency. With constant time (O(1)) fall detection methods and linear operations (O(n)) for heart rate and SpO2 computations, the model's computational complexity is minimal. Blynk-based communication has low networking overhead, ensuring responsiveness in real time. Effective sensor setups and recurring adjustment methods are used to handle issues including calibration, energy usage, and data processing. Vital Vest seeks to address real-world issues in IoT-based wearable technology while enhancing workplace safety by emphasizing cost-effectiveness, deployment simplicity, and operational effectiveness. The potential for expanding this solution to larger industrial applications while maintaining usability and safety is further highlighted by advancements in sensor integration and WBAN connectivity.
