High Power Density Matrix Resonant Switched-Capacitor LED Driver

As LED light source technology advances, the output power gradually increases. Higher power LED light sources require larger heat dissipation elements, which puts higher demands on the efficiency and size of other components. LED driver circuits are a crucial component of the lighting system. To increase efficiency and operating frequency, resonant-type converter circuits can be used to achieve soft-switching operation, which reduces overall size. This paper proposes a matrix resonant switched-capacitor topology to enhance the power density of LED drivers. The design uses a modular design amount, enabling flexible adjustments to output requirements by rapidly expanding the modules. In addition to achieving output regulation by expanding the module unit, this paper proposes a method for regulating the output voltage within a small range based on the proposed topology. This can be achieved by adjusting the duty cycle and switching frequency without the need for expansion. Additionally, a prototype of a basic module with an output power of 50 W is fabricated to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed topology.
