Power Quality Enhancement of Synchronous Reluctance Generator Based Standalone Distributed System Utilizing Universal Active Filter
This study showcases effectiveness of a distributed generation system (DGS) that utilizes a synchronous reluctance generator (SyRG) and a universal active filter (UAF). A SyRG functions as an alternating current source for linear and nonlinear loads. Power factor at source terminals is enhanced with UAF addition for standalone DGS. Shunt voltage source converter (VSC) of UAF generates harmonic currents to guarantee sinusoidal and balanced currents at source side. UAF's series connected VSC adds voltage to counteract any voltage distortion or drop that may occur during power generation. A MATLAB/Simulink model is created to assess effectiveness of PQ improvement in several scenarios, and resulting findings are analyzed and commented. Moreover, these results are validated though developed hardware prototype. Voltages across loads and generator terminals currents are both improved and made to comply with the IEEE std. 519.
