Decline of hammock weaving in the municipality of Dzitbalché, Campeche, Mexico
Hammock weaving in the municipality of Dzitbalché, Campeche, Mexico, has been decreasing in such a way that the weavers have chosen other income sources. This qualitative research, which objective is proposing actions for preserving hammock weaving in Dzitbalché, used the inductive method with the interview as a technique, and an interview guide as an instrument. Results show that the decline of hammock weaving is due to various factors such as the high cost of raw materials (yarn), the lack of interest of new generations for learning this activity, and the difficult access to markets. The solutions include the implementation of social programs from the Government, the construction of a touristic commercial site, access to quality lower price raw materials and commercialization channels, e-commerce, cooperative societies, and personal finance education, as well as capitalizing opportunities such as the Mayan Train.
