PP-5 Family caregivers’ perceptions and experiences with telehealth for home palliative care: a descriptive qualitative study

Introduction
Given the rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, it is essential to prioritize the education and support of informal caregivers. In the Portuguese context, there is a paucity of qualitative research studies that examine the experiences of caregivers who significantly contribute to the care of individuals with palliative care (PC) needs. In addition, there is a lack of literature on carers’ perceptions of the usage of telehealth to assist in daily activity management.
Aims
This qualitative study seeks to examine caregivers’ preparedness for delivering informal palliative home care, their experiences, and the utility of telehealth in facilitating everyday routines.
Method
A descriptive qualitative design was used to conduct the study. Purposive sampling was used to select the study’s sample. Thirteen Portuguese family carers were interviewed in semi-structured interviews between May 2023 to July 2023.
Results
Three themes emerged from the data analysis: (1) assuming the role of a caregiver, (2) support-from-home palliative care team, and (3) telehealth in palliative home care. This study highlights the significant benefits of home-based PC interventions, improving caregiver satisfaction and increasing the likelihood of patients dying at home. Moreover, they diminish the incidence of healthcare usage, especially hospital admissions and visits to the emergency department.
Conclusion
Given the critical role of caregivers in providing home care, it is imperative to guarantee substantial engagement and support for caregivers in PC. The provision of professional PC services at home, coupled with a strong support system for informal caregivers, is essential. Telehealth services should be seen as essential to realize the complete potential of home-based PC intervention.
Impact
This study emphasizes the significance of a person-centered approach in end-of-life care and enhances the long-term sustainability of the healthcare system by valuing informal care.
