PP-7 To what extent are people’s experiences of palliative and end of life care aligned to the ambitions framework for palliative and end of life care in the east of England

Background
The Ambitions Framework, outlines a vision to improve end of life care. Hearing from people with lived experience is crucial to understanding whether the ambitions are reflected in current experiences, and where changes may be required.
Aims
Initiated by NHS East of England, this project explores the extent to which the 6 Ambitions of Palliative and End of Life Care are being achieved, from the perspectives of people affected by terminal illness, as a patient, carer or someone recently bereaved.
Methods
Online survey for people from the East of England living with a terminal illness, their family or friends, volunteers and people who have been bereaved in the last 2 years. Interviews and focus groups with people from the same groups were also conducted. The survey and interviews explored what was important to people at the end of life, and whether the care they receive aligns with the ambitions framework. Participation in the study was secured through proactive engagement of partners in each of the six Integrated Care Systems (ICS) in the East of England, including HealthWatch partners, with a target of securing 100 responses per ICS.
Results
Over 600 people completed the online survey, including 50 people living with terminal illness. Over 50 people participated in an online interview or in person group discussion to share more information about their experiences. Data are currently being analysed.
Conclusions
The survey highlights to what extent people’s lived experience of palliative and end of life care reflects the aspirations set out in the 6 Ambitions - including what is working well and where there is need for improvement.
Impact
Palliative and end of life care decision makers should reflect on the findings and recommendations and work collaboratively to ensure better experiences of end-of-life care.
