Study the cytotoxic effect of Rosuvastatin on MCF-7 cell line in vitro
Background: Breast cancer is the most common disease among women globally and the second greatest cause of cancer-related mortality after lung cancer, posing a significant challenge to global health. In recent years, various innovative strategies, including targeted therapies and their combinations, have been developed to treat cancer, particularly breast cancer, while reducing the bad effects associated with conventional therapy. Synergistic therapy mitigates cancer cell resistance to treatment while minimizing side effects and toxicities. Materials and Methods: In this study, Rosuvastatin was used to assess the median inhibitory concentration (IC50) on the MCF-7 cell line in vitro by employing Methyl Thiazolyltetrazolium (MTT) test. Results: our results revealed that Rosuvastatin has a cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cells. Rosuvastatin concentration of 1000 ug/ml showed the highest cytotoxic effect among the tested concentrations. Regarding the inhibition rate of cell growth, Rosuvastatin IC50 value was determined to be 96.12. This suggests that a lower concentration of Rosuvastatin is required to achieve a 50% reduction in cell viability. Our findings suggest that Rosuvastatin pose a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect with potent inhibition rate. It may potentially be evaluated as a promising strategy for cancer treatments.
