Microstructural evolution in extruded Mg–Al–Ce-Nd-Gd-Y alloy with heterostructure under compression

In this paper, the DRX behavior of Mg–1Al–2Ce-2Nd-0.5Gd-0.5Y (wt.%) alloy with heterostructures under hot compression at 300 °C, 350 °C, 400 °C, 450 °C and strain rate of 0.01s −1 was studied. The results showed a rapid decrease in flow stress at 300 °C, 350–450 °C, where dynamic softening and work hardening reached equilibrium. The faster decline in flow stress at 300 °C was primarily due to significant dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurring at this stage. The second phase played a key role in promoting Particle-Stimulated Nucleation (PSN) by impeding dislocation movement and increasing deformation-stored energy. As the temperature increased, dynamic recovery (DRV) became the dominant softening mechanism, leading to more stable flow stress at higher temperatures.
