Diverting Traffic From Private Vehicles to Public Transportation: A Case Study Of Campus Commutes in Valencia (Spain)
The objective of this paper is to identify the mode choice determinants of university students when commuting to campus using as a case study the public universities of Valencia, Spain. The data used were obtained through face-to-face surveys including a stated preference experiment allowing us to evaluate, -through a mixed logit discrete model-, the effect that different mobility actions could have on the probability of current car users switching to public transport. According to our results, the most effective measures in terms of modal shift from car to public transport are those that penalize the level of service of the former: specifically, the application of traffic restrictions and the implementation of a paid parking system. In relation to public transport, given the relatively low cost sensitivity observed, measures aimed at increasing the frequency, comfort and connectivity of the public transport network are those that would have the greatest impact.
