Prioritizing WAMS Applications for the Modernization of the San Andrés Island Power Grid
This paper explores the importance and the evolution of Wide-Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) in the electrical system of San Andrés Island with the aim of modernizing it and preparing it for the impending energy transition. It highlights the essential role of WAMS in enhancing the reliability and operational stability of the system. Additionally, it examines the relevance of WAMS applications in integrating renewable energy sources and automating control processes. A detailed analysis of implementation requirements and associated benefits is also presented, considering specific needs and corresponding costs. The study concludes with a scenario analysis to determine the most appropriate application for initiating the energy transition, with monitoring identified as a priority option. The proposal includes the evaluation of performance of this application under various contingency scenarios, including topological changes, load variations, three-phase short circuits, and large-scale distributed generation connection/disconnection. This approach will provide a comprehensive understanding of the capability of WAMS systems to address current and future challenges in the electrical system of San Andrés Island.
