Building climate-resilient infrastructure for Hajj pilgrims: A path to safer and sustainable pilgrimage
With the increase in global temperatures, large events like the Hajj pilgrimage encounter increased environmental hazards, particularly in areas experiencing intense summer heat. For millions of Muslims globally, Hajj is a spiritual pilgrimage and a physical trial under arduous circumstances. Establishing climate-resilient infrastructure is essential to protect pilgrims, especially the elderly and persons with pre-existing health disorders susceptible to heat-related ailments. This editorial examines Saudi Arabia's initiatives to enhance Hajj infrastructure through climate-responsive tents, advanced cooling technologies for communal areas, and extensive pre-Hajj health education. The incorporation of these features improves the safety and comfort of pilgrims, aligning with Saudi Arabia's overarching objectives for sustainable event management and establishing a global benchmark in climate adaptation for large gatherings.
