Techno-economic Analysis of Mixed Core Power Transformers
In this study, mixed core transformer losses and Total Ownership Cost (TOC) were analyzed across six core construction scenarios using M3 and M4 core materials. Core costs varied significantly due to differences in material and design. The TOC, which includes purchasing cost and capitalization of losses, also showed notable variation. Some samples had lower TOC despite higher initial costs due to reduced total losses. This underscores the importance of considering both initial costs and long-term losses when selecting transformers. Higher initial costs can lead to lower operational losses and reduced TOC over a transformer's lifespan. TOC is a comprehensive metric that balances initial investment with long-term efficiency. Utility companies should prioritize transformers with lower TOC for optimal economic and operational performance. The study also highlights that high-quality materials and efficient designs can significantly impact cost and losses, leading to substantial savings. In mixed core designs, placing thinner laminations in inner steps can reduce losses compared to thicker laminations, aiding stakeholders in making informed, cost-effective decisions.
