Enhancing structural vibration control in large-scale buildings with nonlinear dynamics: Integrating active fuzzy systems and chaos-enhanced fire hawk optimizer for near-fault earthquake resilience

One of the major challenges of building construction in most of the seismically active zones in different countries is the incapability of the traditionally designed structures in resisting against destructive effects of earthquakes. Since the precise prediction of the earthquake-related ground motions’ characteristics is very challenging, the idea of controlling the seismic response of the structure has been of great concern in recent years. This paper investigates the optimum structural vibration control by implementation of active fuzzy control systems into large-scale building structures with nonlinear behavior. For this purpose, a new improved version of the Fire Hawk Optimizer (FHO) is proposed as I-FHO in which the conventional Brownian randomization in the FHO is replaced by chaotic maps. For vibration control purpose, the active tendon system is applied to a 3-story benchmark structure with nonlinear dynamic behavior in such a way that the I-FHO conducts an optimization procedure in order to provide the best configuration of the rule base and membership functions of the fuzzy logic controller implemented in the active control system. In order to assess the capability of the optimized control scheme, 28 near-fault seismic records suggested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as standard P695 are utilized while the optimum fuzzy controller achieved by the I-FHO computational efforts tries to deal with these records to provide the best control scheme to implement in structures to withstand severe earthquakes. The results demonstrate the capability of the chaos theory in enriching the performance of the standard FHO algorithm by enhancing the convergence behavior alongside the exploitation and exploration aspects of the FHO algorithm determining the mathematical tests functions alongside the optimum vibration control problem.
