FUNERARY REPRESENTATIONS OF THE NORICO-PANNONIANFEMININE CLOTHING IN ROMAN DACIA

The present research aims to bring together and to analyse the representations of the Norico-Pannonian clothing from Roman Dacia. They appeared as a way of expressing identity in Noricum and Pannonia and also in regions where former settlers of these two provinces had been colonized. I have identified twenty-seven cases, most of them coming from Dacia Superior. The typological analysis is realized on the representations of peplos-like tunics, bonnets, brooches and torques. In case of the peplos-like tunics, I have only identified five cases, at Apulum, Cristești and Șeica Mică. The bonnet is the most spread garment, being registered in nineteen cases, and it has the highest variety. Moreover, it is the only element found in association with Roman clothing. When it comes to the Norico-Pannonian brooches, only the type with two knobs is represented on ten monuments. In three cases there are different types of brooches; in the first one it is about a pair of knee-shape brooches, discovered at Târnava (Sibiu County), also from Târnava comes a representation of strongly profiled brooches, and in the third case, coming from Cristești, it is about a depiction of hinged-pin brooches. Torques appear on seven monuments, usually being rendered in complete representations of the Norico-Pannonian clothing.
