Quality of life in patients with presbyopia before and after laser correction

Purpose. To assess the quality of life in patients with presbyopia before and after peripheral Presby FemtoLasik surgery. Material and methods. The subjects of the study were patients with presbyopia aged 52.0±5.6 years. The total number of study participants was 26 patients, including 12 women (46 %) and 14 men (54 %). All patients underwent correction of presbyopia using the peripheral Presby FemtoLasik method and the Microscan VIZUM excimer laser unit. The quality of vision was assessed based on a patient survey using the standard Visual Function 14 (VF-14) subjective satisfaction questionnaire. The patients were surveyed before surgery, 6 months after it, and also in the late postoperative period (from 1 to 3 years). Results. The value of the integral indicator of quality of life according to the VF-14 questionnaire in patients before surgery varied from 17 to 91 points. The average value of this indicator was 61 (52–67) points. 6 months after the operation, the average value of the quality of life indicator significantly increased to 98 (96–100) points (p < 0.05). The increase in the indicator was 60 %. The value of the indicator varied from 89 to 100 points. Evaluation of the value of the integral indicator of quality of life for the period from 1 to 3 years did not reveal significant differences in relation to the value of the indicator immediately after surgery. Conclusion. The average value of the integral indicator of the quality of life of patients after the peripheral Presby FemtoLasik operation increased by 60 % and amounted to 98 (96–100) points. The quality of life in patients in the late postoperative period (from 1 to 3 years) did not significantly decrease.
