Refractive surgery in patients with strabismus

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of excimer laser vision correction in adult patients with partially accommodative strabismus. The study included 24 patients with horizontal strabismus: 14 with fully refractive accommodative esotropia and 10 with partially accommodative esotropia. Preoperative assessments included uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, manifest and cycloplegic refraction, and the angle of strabismus measured using prism lenses. Patients underwent excimer laser vision correction using LASIK and FEMTO LASIK methods. One year postoperatively, all patients showed significant improvement in uncorrected visual acuity to 0.8–1.2, reduction in refractive anomalies, and a significant decrease in the angle of strabismus. In 75 % of cases, excimer laser correction eliminated the need for further strabismus surgery. Patients reported improved quality of life due to enhanced visual functions and cosmetic appearance. This study confirms the high efficacy of excimer laser correction for treating partially accommodative strabismus in adults. However, further research is needed to fully understand the long-term safety and effectiveness of this method. Keywords: excimer laser vision correction, accommodative esotropia, strabismus, refractive errors
