Elevating Deep Learning Models with Gated Recurrent Units for Emotion Detection

This research explores emotion analysis in natural language processing (NLP) by employing bidirectional gated recurrent units (GRUs). Unlike traditional models that process data in a single direction, bidirectional GRUs can capture dependencies in both past and future sequences, making them significantly more effective for tasks like emotion analysis where context is crucial. The proposed model utilizes a sequential framework, starting with an embedding layer that converts word indices into dense vectors for text processing. To combat overfitting, a dropout layer with a 0.5 rate is incorporated. This is followed by two bidirectional GRU layers, each configured to return sequences and capture detailed temporal dependencies. A batch normalization layer is applied to stabilize and speed up training. An additional bidirectional GRU layer, consisting of six units and a softmax activation function, further refines the model’s ability to capture complex dependencies and classify emotions into six categories. The model concludes with a dense layer and uses the Adam optimizer with sparse categorical cross-entropy as the loss function. Accuracy is employed to evaluate performance, with the model achieving a 94% accuracy rate. This indicates the superior capability of bidirectional GRUs in detecting emotions by effectively identifying intricate patterns in sequential data. The model summary details the components and parameter choices that contribute to these strong results.
