Mangrove Density Sprawl Analysis Using Multispectral Images of Revas Beach, Uran Taluka in Raigad District
Remote sensing is a process of acquiring knowledge about an area, object, or occurrence from a certain distance, normally using satellite, aeroplanes, or UAVs which carries aerial-based sensors. It has a lot of uses or implementations like environmental monitoring, agriculture, geology and mineral exploration, water resources finding etc. It captures data by locating and measuring electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in which we have spectral band and these spectral regions are categorized on its frequency and wavelength. There are two types of imagery viz multispectral imagery and hyperspectral imagery. In this research paper, multispectral images of mangroves of Mumbai coast are inspected. Mangroves are distinctive and extraordinarily productive ecosystems that may be found along tropical and subtropical coasts. They are made up of trees, bushes, and other plants that can withstand salt growth and are found in intertidal areas, where land meets the sea. To evaluate the production and health of mangrove ecosystem, the density of mangroves is evaluated. The number of mangrove trees or the quantity of biomass present in a specific area of a mangrove forest is referred to as the density of mangroves. Multispectral imaging is a method used in remote sensing to take pictures of a scene or an item consisting of many spectral bands or wavelengths. The Normalised Difference Vegetation indicator (NDVI), which is produced from multispectral pictures, is a commonly used vegetation indicator. It measures the difference between the reflectance of near-infrared (NIR) and visible red (VIS) light to quantify the density and health of vegetation in a region. Vegetation monitoring, crop health evaluation, drought monitoring, land cover categorization, ecological research, and environmental monitoring are some of the major applications of analysis of NDVI values. In image processing, Hue Saturation Value (HSV) and Red, Green, Blue (RGB) are two common colour models which are being used. These colour models are used in this paper for adjusting color thresholds and differentiating the parts where mangroves are covered. This study explains how to determine a mangrove's density from a satellite picture using the NDVI and HSV colour spaces. This technique is used in this instance to both identify and calculate the density of mangroves.
