Shoreline and Land Cover Change Monitoring in Uppada Region with Google Earth Engine

The ‘Shoreline and Land Cover Change Monitoring in Uppada region with Google Earth Engine’ project is intended to improve knowledge and enable informed decisionmaking towards sustainable coastal management. It has two main modules which include: Shoreline Change Analysis and Coastal Land Cover Change Detection. The shoreline change detection section utilizes multi-temporal satellite imagery in combination with Sentinel 2 imagery where advanced image processing techniques are used for quantifying shoreline position changes over the past few decades, thus allowing surveillance of areas that are susceptible to rapid change along coastlines by considering the erosion rate in the coastline. On the other hand, coastal land cover change detection employs machine learning models, Random Forest, CART(Classification and Regression Trees) and Naive Bayes algorithms that facilitate tracking of urbanization processes, by considering the factors of vegetation cover, water bodies, built-up area, and barren land use within coastal zones. Consequently, this enhances comprehension of how humans affect these ecosystems. The project aims at identifying vulnerable coastal locations during the period of 1986 to 2024 in the region of Uppada, Andhra Pradesh, India using Google Earth Engine. In summary, the shoreline change analysis and land cover change detection are the considered in effectively monitoring of coastal zones.
