Analyzing Twitter Sentiment Trends During the FIFA World Cup 2022
Sentiment analysis and event trend analysis are critical areas of research, offering valuable insights into the emotional landscape surrounding significant events. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of sentiment dynamics and event trends in the context of the FIFA World Cup 2022(WC22) tournament. Utilizing sentiment analysis techniques with TextBlob, VADER, and BERT sentiment analyzers, the study investigates the overall sentiment impact on World Cup-related tweets and their correlation with geographic locations. The geo-sentimental analysis reveals the wide reach and significant impact of the World Cup across the globe, irrespective of national team participation. The sentiment analysis is leveraged to detect potential event trends throughout the World Cup, with comparisons made to actual match events on specific dates. The evaluation metrics demonstrate promising results, with F1-scores of 86% for VADER-based analysis and 91% for BERT-based analysis. Furthermore, micro trend analysis is performed on the games between France with Morocco and Argentina with France that happened on 14 and 18 December 2022 respectively. The findings indicate a prevailing sense of positivity among fans, while negative discussions largely revolve around political controversies during the tournament. By enhancing the methodology and incorporating advanced technologies, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of sentiment dynamics and event trends, transcending various domains. The outcomes have significant implications for the analysis of sentiment and trends in major events, enriching an understanding of the emotional landscape surrounding such events.
