Integrating Machine Learning in Pre-Clinical Research for Predictive Analytics in Drug Development

Machine learning techniques in pre-clinical research opens opportunity towards a more predictive and efficient drug development. The research work advances machine learning techniques applied to predictive analytics for drug efficacy and safety assessments in order to fast-track identification and optimization of therapeutic candidates. We begin by providing an overview of current challenges in pre-clinical drug development, which remains afflicted with high attrition rates and also involves biological interactions that have remained poorly understood due to the inadequacy of traditional methods. The contribution of the paper is designing a framework using different ML models, inclusive of deep learning and ensemble methods to integrate and analyze multi-dimensional data coming out of genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. We also explore the case studies where ML predictions correlated strongly with clinical outcomes, hence reducing the time and cost associated with drug trials. We further discuss some of the ethical considerations that arise and highlight the need for robust validation frameworks that assure the reliability and reproducibility of ML-driven predictions.
