Transport phenomena and hydraulics: a computational approach to the teaching-learning process

The teaching and learning process and professional practice related to Transport Phenomena, Fluid Mechanics, and Hydraulics disciplines demand modern computers for problem-solving. This paper presents different examples of problem resolution typically encountered by students, professionals, and researchers in these fields. The examples provide open-source computational codes, facilitating immediate use in the classroom or practical applications. This approach stems from the fact that engineers deal with non-trivial problems in this area, often necessitating the use of free and commercial codes that can be employed on programmable calculators or various types of computers. Thus, the objective is to contribute to engineering education aspects associated with using computational resources and numerical methods, which, if appropriately conducted, will yield positive outcomes for training professionals and researchers. The developed codes and discussed examples encompass flow rates and diameters calculation for pipelines, sequent depths for hydraulic jumps in trapezoidal channels, fitting mathematical models to experimental data, and solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations.
