DID THE SLAVS BELIEVE IN “LAW”
In many religions there was a tendency to idolize “Justice” generally “Law”. We observe this in Egypt, the ancient Near East or the Greek and Roman cultures. Did the Slavs, like the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, develop in their mythology a personified concept of the god of Law ? The name of the god sounding Prowe appears only in the account of the chronicler Helmold. The account refers to the year 1156.The sacred grove of this deity was located in the western part of Swabia in the country of the Vagrians. The account contains important information related to the administration of the law and the celebration of rituals are : 1. information about the exercise of courts 2. information about the right of asylum. 3. Repetitiveness, cyclicity of the rituals and meetings held there 4. Information about the sacred significance of the place in which the previous functions are held. We think that by analyzing the message it can be assumed that the sacred function opens the space for the exercise of law. It is a sacred space located in a chram, which is an oak grove with a clearing surrounded by a fence with two gates dedicated to a deity named Prowe. It is the site of his hierophany. Thus, it can be hypothesized that Prowe whose name means law was the god of law for the Vagrians.
